Grievances and Unit Issues

The Union filed its third grievance in two years regarding management’s failure to consistently provide a charge nurse on the ICU. The grievance was heard on May 1st. Since the problem has continued despite management’s assurances that they are trying to comply with the contract language, the delegates voted to take the grievance to arbitration.

Unit Representatives

The following unit representatives have attended the orientation session and have been entrusted with their unit’s copy of the NYPNU Resource Manual: Adele Adams (MEETH Amb. Surg.), Meredith Cesa (ICU), Erika Cooper (Endoscopy), Alesia Daye (MEETH PACU), Connie Dowd (Cath Lab), Laura Glazner (8 Uris), Michelle Lemma (5 Uris), Agata Molecka (7 Lachman), Rosetta Mullings-Friend (6 Uris), Janice Perry (Patient Care Management), and Angela Vitale-Colon (Radiology). The Resource Manual is packed with a cornucopia of useful information, including how to verify that your salary is correct, eligibility for family and medical leave, tips for self-scheduling, the annual time planning calendar, jury duty advice, etc. The next orientation for unit representatives will be May 28th at 4:00pm. The unit representatives are listed on the back. If your unit does not have a representative, please call the Union office to volunteer. Don’t let your unit miss out on this great resource!

Town Hall Meetings

The Union unites our voices; it does not and should not replace them. Upper management needs to hear directly from you what is happening on your units. The next Town Hall Meetings are scheduled for Monday, May 19th from 7am - 8am and 3pm - 4pm at 64th Street's Corwin Hall and Wednesday, May 21st at 1pm - 2pm and 4pm - 5pm in Einhorn Auditorium.

Don't forget! Online CEs

As of the beginning of this year, NYPNU has been offering our nurses CEs on a wide range of topics, all available online at www.NursingCenter.com. Call Diane at (212) 988-5565 or e-mail her at Greenfeld@nypnu.org for the NYPNU access code. Then go to www.nursingcenter.com and take up to 1 test per month for free as a benefit of NYPNU. Register by clicking on My NursingCenter on the upper right hand side of the screen. Then click on Join for free.

New Member Benefit

NYPNU has joined the USAlliance Federal Credit Union as an association. NYPNU members who attended the Nurse Appreciation Breakfast or Lunch had the opportunity to meet with Allan Rentz, our USAlliance liaison, and many members joined on the spot. Credit unions provide all the services that banks do, but they usually have better rates because they are non-profit. You and members of your family can join the credit union and remain members for life even if you are no longer a NYPNU member. To learn about the benefits of membership, go to https://www.usalliance.org/html/mem.htm, or come by the NYPNU office to pick up a member information packet.

NYPNU SNAP Students

Once again, NYPNU will sponsor a class of 10 student nurse assistants for an 8-week program this summer. We started this program last summer, and it is already bearing fruit. Tiffany Harrison, our first NYPNU SNAP student to be hired as a staff nurse, started working on 3 Wollman in April. Please be advised, if you precept Hillman or NYPNU SNAP students, you are entitled to preceptor pay.

Political Action

NYPNU has joined the Health Care for All New York Campaign, a statewide coalition dedicated to winning affordable, comprehensive, high quality health care for all New York’s residents by 2010. For more information, go to http://www.hcfany.org.
