Pre-Bargaining Committee
The Pre-Bargaining Committee has been meeting monthly to formulate contract proposals. All RNs are asked to participate by filling out the pre-bargaining surveys, which are due back on May 21st.
Nurse/Patient Ratio Committee
We are committed to bargaining for safe and appropriate nurse/patient ratios, and we need input from all units as we prepare for bargaining. Please submit the nurse/patient ratio survey no later than May 30th.
Documentation Job Action
Keep them coming!
We are entering the final stretch in collecting the staffing documentation forms. These forms are crucial to support our demands for improved ratios. The union has received hundreds of forms with particularly strong returns from the ER, 11 Uris, and Labor & Delivery. Let's cross the finish line on May 30th at full throttle!
Grievance Update
Hearing dates have been scheduled for two class action grievances concerning ratio violations and break denials. The grievance on behalf of the 4 Wollman night shift will be heard on May 16th, and the grievance on behalf of 6 Uris RNs will be heard on May 19th.
NYPNU has filed a 3rd step class action grievance on behalf of the peri-operative RNs. These RNs were denied the use of vacation, holiday, or free days during the blizzard in February. In addition, the RNs who called in sick were denied pay if they did not furnish a doctor's note.
NYPNU continues to fight the chronic understaffing in the ER. An arbitration date has been scheduled.

The union has filed a class action grievance to have contraceptives covered under our prescription plan as required by law.
NYPNU will be arbitrating the unjust termination of 2 RNs. One RN was terminated for an alleged breach of a hospital security policy; the other was terminated for excessive absenteeism.
New ACE Unit Opening on 4 Lachman
LHH plans to open a new unit on 4 Lachman focusing on Acute Care for the Elderly (ACE). NYPNU has been meeting with the hospital to formulate ratios and address other concerns that RNs have raised.
Harsh Cleaning Chemicals
A number of RNs on different units throughout the hospital have complained about the noxious chemicals in LHH's cleaning products. RNs are complaining of various side effects, including headaches, nausea, and eye irritation. NYPNU has sent a letter to management regarding the problem along with information on safer, non-allergenic cleaning agents.
Nurse Appreciation Breakfast
NYPNU hosted a very well attended breakfast on May 7th. A good time was had by all.
Certification Courses
There are many recertifications now due-
ACLS, BCLS, PALS, etc. Certifications can be obtained through the Learn ACLS Training Center at LHH/MEETH or through Asuncion Mabaquiao, a NYPNU delegate on 11 Uris. Both promise stress-free recertifications. For more information, contact Asuncion Mabaquiao at (646) 418-7354 or Learn ACLS at (212) 421-4131. Learn ACLS would also like to hear from instructors who are interested in working with them. Copies of the ACLS Learn course schedule are available in the NYPNU office.
