Membership Meeting
We will have a general membership meeting on Sept. 3rd at St. Jean's Church to review contract proposals. Bargaining will begin in September.

Contract Negotiations are Around the Corner
Proposals to be discussed at the membership meeting include:
  • Improved nurse/patient ratios
  • Higher salaries across the board
  • Retirement health coverage
  • Holiday Distribution The strength of our contract depends on every member doing his or her share. If you haven't already done so, fill out the form on the reverse side to let us know how you can help. If you can do nothing else, be part of a phone tree on your unit and sign-up to attend rallies and informational pickets. Late-breaking news will also be distributed through e-mail, so make sure we have your e-mail address.

    Grievance Update
On August 1st, an experienced 11 Uris nurse with an exemplary record was unjustly given a two- week suspension after appropriately intervening to ensure a patient's safety. Because of her timely intervention, appropriate personnel were summoned to the patient's bedside, and the appropriate medications were administered as per MD order. Rather than commending the nurse for her efforts, the nursing administration caved in to the attending doctor's ego-driven vendetta against the nurse and accused her of "practicing outside the scope of her practice." NYPNU immediately filed a grievance, and the delegates have already voted to take the case to arbitration. We have no doubt that the nurse will prevail.
  • Cleaning Chemicals
The union met with management on July 22nd to discuss the noxious fumes from the hospital's cleaning agents. We learned that Max Shine, a less caustic floor cleaner, was piloted on 4 Uris, and the health of the staff improved considerably. However, due to a lack of complaints from other floors, management remains unconvinced that there is a need to switch products throughout the hospital. If you are experiencing negative reactions to the cleaning agents, please contact Peter Lucey, the Director of Building Services, at x2525, PCN #2663, or plucey@lenoxhill.net.

NYPNU Solidarity Picnic - Back by popular demand, the Picnic will be held on Sept. 20th in Central Park.
