Save the Date
The NYPNU Nurse Appreciation Breakfast will be on Wednesday, May 7th from 8:30am-11:30am.

New Delegate

The delegates voted to appoint Taniki Brown from the Emergency Department to a vacancy in the Delegate Assembly. The next election for officers, Executive Board members and delegates will be held in October 2008.

Grievances and Unit Issues

The delegates voted to go to arbitration on behalf of an RN who received a 3-day suspension for insubordination. The nurse had refused to float to another unit when it would have left her own unit understaffed. The third step grievance hearing was held on 3/19/08, and management refused to reconsider the level of discipline. The staffing situation is improving, but the Union continues to use the grievance process to aggressively enforce our contractual staffing standards. Class action grievances concerning unsafe staffing were heard on 7 Uris, 9 Uris and in the ED. A class action grievance on behalf of Case Managers who lack sufficient social work support was heard on 4/3/08. We have encountered great difficulty in scheduling the ICU and 7 Lachman grievances, but we are continuing our efforts. NYPNU has also filed class action grievances on behalf of RNs working in the Well Baby Nursery, CT/ Radiology and Endoscopy.

Attendance Excellence Initiative

Congratulations to the winners of the Attendance Excellence Initiative drawing: Jithu Joseph, Valerie Morton-Finley, Catherine Murphy, and Maria Ramos. Each of them will receive a check for $2,500.

Sick Time Payout

We are still attempting to negotiate a sick time payout plan with the Administration. Although we have met to discuss the issue several times over the past year, we have yet to receive a clear response to our proposal.

Improvements in the Defined Contribution Plan

The Hospital has improved the Defined Contribution Plan (DCP) for all participating employees. This applies to all employees hired on or after January 1, 2006. NYPNU employees in the DCP plan will now be fully vested after 3 years instead of 7 years. The top employer contribution level will be 8% instead of 7%, and it will jump from 3% to 5% in the sixth year of service. The new employer contribution schedule is as follows:

Years of Service% of Base Pay
1-53
6-105
11-206
21-297
30 or more8
