Nurse Appreciation Breakfast
Save the Date: To celebrate Nurse Appreciation Week, all NYPNU members are invited to an open-house breakfast at the NYPNU office on Wednesday, May 5th from 8:30am - 11:30am.

Professional Development Days
The Staff/Management Committee formed a subcommittee to develop a policy that will ensure that the funds set aside for Professional Development Days will be allocated fairly and equitably.

Grievances and Unit Issues
  • On 9 East/11Uris, the responsibility for charge duty is falling disproportionately on a handful of RNs. The new contract states that "charge/resource responsibilities shall be rotated equitably among non-probationary staff who have completed one (1) year of service at LHH." If efforts to resolve the matter on the unit level are not successful, a class action grievance will be filed.
  • A class action grievance has been filed because management failed to follow proper posting procedures when a new bargaining unit position was created in the MEETH OR. Management created the position for a scrub tech who recently became an RN.
  • In response to a class action grievance, management has agreed that members who receive only a verbal counseling for use of sick time cannot be required to provide a doctor's note when they call in sick in the future.
  • A hospital-wide class action grievance over nurses' inability to take breaks was heard on April 5th. This is particularly a problem on 5 Lachman and 9 Uris. During an 11½ hour shift, you are entitled to two paid breaks (15 minutes and 30 minutes, which can be combined) and a 1 hour unpaid meal break. If you are denied a meal break, be sure to submit an overtime slip. Repeated violations should be brought to the Union's attention by faxing a Staffing Documentation Form to the NYPNU office. If everyone on the shift experiences the same problem(s), please note that on the form.

    Case Manager Bargaining
Bargaining sessions have been scheduled during the month of April. Issues to be discussed include salaries, hours, overtime, staffing levels, and non-case manager functions.

May 11th Workshop for Per Diems
This workshop will discuss per diems' eligibility for partial unemployment benefits when their hours have been involuntarily reduced. Information will also be available on a group health insurance policy that can be purchased through Working Today. Fliers with additional information will be posted shortly.

    New Contract
The new contract has been sent to the printer and should be available to members in approximately one month.
