Documentation Job Action
Keep them coming!

RNs are encouraged to fill out the NYPNU Staffing Documentation Forms to report violations of the nurse/patient ratio and other contract provisions to the Union. Forms were mailed to every RN, but they can also be obtained from any delegate, the Union office, and the NYPNU web site. These forms are crucial to compiling data for the upcoming contract negotiations.

Grievance Update
  • The Union has filed class action grievances regarding short staffing/ratio violations on 6 Uris/6 East and 4 Wollman.
  • The Union filed a class action grievance for perioperative RNs who were denied an emergency day when they called in during the blizzard.
  • The delegates voted to go to arbitration over the reduced paycheck distribution hours and the hospital's decision to destroy pay stubs that are not picked up.

    Arbitration Victory
NYPNU was victorious in an arbitration over the improper dismissal of a staff RN who had been on FMLA leave. The RN was reinstated with full seniority.

    ER Fast Track Protocol
ER management issued a new fast track protocol whereby RNs would administer analgesics and order X-rays for patients prior to their being seen by an MD, a PA, or an NP. Risk management's response was that this is a purely "administrative issue." NYPNU then contacted the state Board of Nursing and the
  • Department of Health. Their response was that this is entirely outside the scope of practice for RNs. NYPNU sent a letter to every RN in the ER advising them not to follow the protocol. The policy is currently "on hold."

    Infection Control
All NYPNU RNs can take the infection control class online at the NYPNU web site.

    BCLS/ACLS/PALS
The hospital pays for course fees and hours of attendance for all timely recertifications. Forms for reimbursement can be obtained in the nursing office on 2 Lachman.

    Nurse/Patient Ratio Workshop
This workshop was co-sponsored by NYPNU and the California Nurses Association (CNA). On March 26, 2003 Jill Furillo, the Director of Government Relations for CNA, explained how CNA got nurse/patient ratio legislation enacted in California and told us what we can do to accomplish the same objectives in New York.
