Memorandum April 4, 2002

To: NYPNU Staff RNs
From: Maureen McCarthy, RN, President of NYPNU

As a result of the Membership Meeting held on Wednesday, April 3, 2002, and our collective decision regarding "in-charge" responsibilities, the Hospital Administration called for an emergency meeting with NYPNU representatives. This meeting was held today to begin to resolve the problems surrounding "in-charge" responsibilities and staffing.

As a temporary emergency measure, NYPNU has agreed to institute the following:
  1. In lieu of a "Charge" Nurse, the Manager will designate a "Resource" Nurse who will assume the following responsibilities only:
    • Assure that all staff that is assigned to the unit is present and resolves assignment issues at the beginning of the shift.
    • Act as a resource person for staff and act as a point person regarding bed availability.
    • Will plan and coordinate breaks as needed.

  2. These measures were agreed to in the short-term with the assurances that unit-based solutions regarding charge and staffing will be resolved expeditiously.
Our next meeting to resolve this issue is scheduled for Friday, April 5, 2002. We will keep you informed of our progress.
